MORE THAN A HUNDRED STORIES

More Than 100 Stories is a commission led by artists Sarah Butler and Nicole Mollet that explores and creatively maps the Creative People and Places programme.

Searching for images - building texts

29.04.16

I have been working on a raft of new texts for our final ‘product’, which will be a digital collection of over 100 stories and images inspired by Creative People and Places, and responding to our ten selected themes: Trust, Decision-Making, Failure, People, Local, Time, Partnership, Confidence, Language, Taste.

I started off by ‘mind-mapping’ each theme, trawling through my notebooks and responses to questions Nicole and I have asked via hand-drawn postcards and online surveys, as well as trying to excavate my own associations and ideas. I write very visually and have found myself drawn to the images which have come out of this process: constellations, see-saws, table tops and doorsteps. Finding an image allows me to start building a piece of writing: to make the idea concrete rather than abstract.

I am thinking about each piece as a fragment – something that stands alone but is intended as part of a larger picture. I’ve been writing a mix of prose, poetry and even a bit of script here and there.

I am also starting conversations with a couple of sound artists, thinking about how I might create some audio pieces to complement the written pieces. It’s been fascinating approaching writing with the idea of audio, rather than text on the page – watch this space!
